How Should You Teach a Dog to Sit: A Dog Trainer Explains

Teaching your dog to sit is a great way for them to learn patience, discipline, and respect. Getting them to sit for the first time, however, can sometimes be a bit of a challenge.

wikiHow asked professional dog trainer David Levin about the best ways to train a dog to sit down. Here’s what he said:

Make your dog get into a sitting position with a treat. When you first start out, your dog doesn’t know what the word “sit” means. Hold a treat in your hand, then pick it up over your dog’s head until they sit down. Once they’re in position, give them the treat. Say the word “sit” when you know your puppy understands what they’re doing. It might take a few training sessions to get your puppy to make the connection, so don’t start out saying “sit” right away. Instead, keep using the treat method to make your dog sit down until they understand that sitting down gets them a treat. Practice sitting in different environments. Your puppy might be able to sit in your living room, but what about the park or in your backyard? Take your puppy around your neighborhood and have them practice sitting in fun, new environments.
